E-commerce website cost in India in 2026

E-commerce website cost in India in 2026

An e-commerce build costs between ₹50,000 and ₹2.5 lakh in India, most commonly WooCommerce with a payment gateway. That range is wide because four things move it, and because the build price is only part of what an online store costs you.

What drives the build cost

  • Catalogue size — the number of products and how many variants each has
  • Inventory complexity — single location or several, and whether stock must stay accurate in real time
  • Integrations — accounting, logistics, marketplaces, CRM
  • Design customisation — a configured theme versus a designed store

Of these, integrations are the most commonly underestimated. Each one is a small project with its own testing and its own failure modes, and 'connect it to Tally' is a line in a brief that can consume a fifth of the budget.

Shopify or WooCommerce

Hosted platforms such as Shopify reduce the initial build by ten to twenty per cent, because less is being assembled from parts. They then charge a monthly platform fee and, on some plans, a transaction percentage. Self-hosted WooCommerce costs more upfront and less monthly.

Over roughly three years the two converge, and which comes out ahead depends on your order volume. Low volume favours the hosted platform; high volume favours self-hosted, because the platform fee scales with you and the hosting bill largely does not.

The decision should also account for who maintains it. WooCommerce gives you control and hands you the responsibility for updates, security and compatibility. Shopify takes both away.

Running costs are higher than a normal website

ItemE-commerceOrdinary business site
Maintenance₹5,000 – ₹20,000 / month₹2,000 – ₹10,000 / month
HostingVPS, ₹4,800 – ₹42,000 / yearShared hosting is usually enough
Payment gatewayPercentage of every transactionNot applicable

The maintenance gap is not padding. A store has stock to keep accurate, orders that must not be lost, payment integrations that break when a provider changes something, and a security exposure that a brochure site does not have.

The India-specific costs generic quotes miss

International pricing guides and templated quotes routinely omit four things that are not optional here:

  • GST-compliant invoicing
  • E-invoicing once you cross the applicable turnover threshold
  • E-way bills for goods movement
  • Logistics aggregator integration, with cash-on-delivery reconciliation

Cash on delivery deserves particular attention. It remains a meaningful share of Indian online orders, and reconciling what the courier collected against what reached your bank account is a real operational process that the software has to support. Stores that treat it as an afterthought discover the gap at the end of the first busy month.

The most expensive mistake

Building features before you have traffic. Wishlists, loyalty programmes, a mobile app, personalised recommendations — each of these is reasonable eventually and none of them is reasonable in version one, because they are optimisations for customer behaviour you have not observed yet.

Launch with three things done properly: a clean catalogue, a checkout that works well on a phone, and payments that do not fail. Everything else can be funded by what those three produce.

One thing to settle before you sign

Make sure the domain, the hosting account and the customer data are in your name from day one. Vendor lock-in on an e-commerce store is worse than on a website, because your customer list and order history are the business — and discovering three years later that they sit in somebody else's account is a negotiation you will not enjoy.

If you are choosing between platforms and want the three-year arithmetic run against your actual expected order volume, we will do that for you at no cost.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an e-commerce website cost in India? +

Between ₹50,000 and ₹2.5 lakh for most builds. The range is driven by catalogue size, inventory complexity, how many systems it must integrate with, and how much of the design is custom rather than configured.

Shopify or WooCommerce — which is cheaper? +

Shopify builds come in roughly ten to twenty per cent cheaper upfront, then charge a monthly platform fee. WooCommerce costs more to build and less to run. Over about three years the two converge, and which wins depends on your order volume.

What does an online store cost to maintain? +

₹5,000 to ₹20,000 a month, against ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 for an ordinary business site. The gap is real — a store has stock accuracy, orders that cannot be lost, payment integrations that break, and a much larger security exposure.

What India-specific costs do generic quotes miss? +

GST-compliant invoicing, e-invoicing once you cross the applicable turnover threshold, e-way bills for goods movement, and logistics aggregator integration with cash-on-delivery reconciliation. None of these are optional and templated international quotes routinely omit all four.

What should I leave out of the first version? +

Wishlists, loyalty programmes, a mobile app and personalised recommendations. Each optimises for customer behaviour you have not observed yet. Launch with a clean catalogue, a checkout that works well on a phone, and payments that do not fail.

Who owns my customer and order data? +

You should, and it should be in your name from day one. On an online store the customer list and order history are the business, and discovering years later that they sit in a supplier's account is a difficult position to be in.
